Summer 2023

This page shows the Story Maps that field school participants made in the summer of 2023 examining different themes about African American preservation and heritage, rooted in the place of Moving Star Hall and The Progressive Club of Johns Island. The recording of the presentation was made by the Charleston County Library and can be found on their YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAfXzZRS4Ks.

This painting by Brittney Washington is part of their final product for the field school, and was presented with contextualizing slides and discussion of A Through-line of Resistance and Creation among Lowcountry Black Folks. Click to see the slides.

We also held a mid-point presentation discussing the activities of the first two weeks of the field school, and giving an overview of the history of Moving Star Hall and the Progressive Club of Johns Island. To view the slides click below.

Summer 2024 will entail a similar study of Hebron Church and the Promise Land School school annex.
