Apply

We consider people for three different roles– participants in the full three-week field school, participants for one-day learning workshops, and community educators. Each role has its own application and admissions process.

The Field School application is closed - This is the role for 10, full time, field school participants. You must be able to commit to attend the field school every day, 9-5, Monday through Friday May 20-through June 7th, 2024. This is a grant-funded no-cost experience (including lodging and food), and participants will receive a $1,000 weekly stipend. In other words, this is the “total” experience.

Community Educator roles are largely filled, but if you are interested in participating as a community educator please email Amalia Leifeste. In this role you will educate field school participants by sharing personal and/or family histories or other expertise pertaining to the local history of Johns Island, James Island, or neighboring Sea Islands during the Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and Civil Rights eras (1860s-1970s). Community educators will earn a $500 stipend per day of their participation and will work with the field school staff to schedule full or partial days for their participation in the field school as part of the teaching team.

Single-Day Learning Workshop - Please email us if you would like to join the program for a single-day learning workshop. This opportunity is for those who cannot commit to participating in the full three-week field school but want to attend one or more of the single-day learning experiences in a student/learner capacity.  Participation in these break-away portions of the 3-week curriculum, or 'workshops,' is offered at no cost, and with a $200 stipend per day of participation.  The specific topics and dates will be listed soon, but workshops will fall within the May 20-June 7th weekday time frame.
